Requiem for an Inspiration... (October 4, 2009)
Real life is much messier than fiction. In a novel we expect to understand the plot. We expect that all mysteries about the characters will be revealed. We expect that ultimately the story will make sense. We may want all those things in real life too – but all too often, we do not get them. |

Confessions of an occasional failure... (Sept 1, 2009)

Toronto. That took place inside my own heart.

This is a terrible thing for a writer to admit... (February 16, 2009)
A writer is supposed to be in control of the story – and yet Nate’s secret kind of snuck up on me and smacked me between the eyes. I still remember the exact moment it hit me. |

Excuse me, can I name a character after you? (March 10, 2009)
So I walked up to the guy and said, “I’m sorry – you must think I’m insane, but I’m trying to come up with the right name for a character in my new book and I’m just curious what your name is.” |
