“Perhaps I should have read something into the fact that when I first laid eyes on Sam some girl was yelling at him, and when I first met Kevin he nearly killed me...”

Jo’s summer is off to an interesting start. Now all the teenager needs is a job, future plans and a few goals for her life. No big deal right?

She’d also like to know why no one talks about the horrible accident she witnessed last summer at Cornerstone church. But as much as she wants to know the truth, someone else wants to keep it a secret. Can she handle creepy stalker guys, death threats and her crazy love life without losing control?

For Jo, unravelling the mystery and piecing her life back together will mean discovering if God really listens—and if he cares enough to answer.

Excuse me… can I name a character after you? (March 10, 2009)
Excuse me… can I name a character after you?
March 10, 2009

Character names come from weird places. Kevin is the name of the first boy I ever had a crush on. His last name was that guy’s best friend.

Samuel James Underwood gets his name from one of my favourite Steve Miller songs. And Jo’s  comes from one of my favourite lines from a bad 80’s romance movie.

But Nate’s name has my favourite back story. I had originally named him Karl, but while I was manning a newspaper booth at a Kirk Franklin concert my friend Kelly told me she didn’t think the name suited the character.

“What does the character look like?” she asked.

“That guy over there,” I said.

“Well, what’s his name?”

“I don’t know – I’ll go ask.”

So I walked up to the guy and said, “I’m sorry – you must think I’m insane, but I’m trying to come up with the right name for a character in my new book and I’m just curious what your name is.”

He laughed.

“It’s Nate.”

So thank you Nate. I told you I’d name a character after you. And look – I did!
